Shahbuddin Mohammed Shah Jahan (also spelled Shah Jehan, Shahjehan. Persian: شاه ‌جهان), January 5, 1592 – January 22, 1666) was the ruler of the Mughal Empire in India from 1628 until 1658. The name Shah Jahan comes from Persian شاه ‌جهان meaning "The Ruler of the World". Shah Jahan is best known as the builder of the Taj Mahal, a shrine to his Persian second wife, Arjumand Bano Begum, popularly known as Mumtaz Mahal ("Ornament of the Palace") whom he married on May 10, 1612, at the age of 20.

Taj Mahal is a Tomb made as a tribute to Mumtaz by the great mugal Emperor Shah Jahan....this is as per the written history...

archeological survey of India has pointed out with evidence that the presently known Taj Mahal was earlier a shiva temple(before the Mughals Invaded)....then it was captured by the mughals and all the Idols and statues were mutilated, beheaded and destroyed as they have done with many ancient temples(another example is the elephenta caves).

After a period of time it was again reworked upon and was named the Taj Mahal....it is also said that the architect who masterminded the rebuilding was blinded by shahjahan's soldiers....

finally.....it is Taj Mahal and not Thaj Mahal

The Taj Mahal (Hindi: ताज महल, Persian & Urdu: تاج محل) is a monument located in Agra in India, constructed between 1631 and 1654 by a workforce of more than twenty thousand. The Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned its construction as a mausoleum for his favorite wife, Arjumand Banu Begum, who was known as Mumtaz Mahal.

Everybody is wrong. The Taj Mahal (correct spelling) curry house in Birmingham England, was actually built as a grocery shop in 1931 by Arnold Arkwright in memory of his cat.

It became a curry restuarant in 1983 and has been variously called Balti Towers, Delhi Belly, and most recently the Taj Mahal

"A white marble tomb built in 1631-48 in Agra, seat of the Mugal Empire, by Shah Jehan for his wife, Arjuman Banu Begum, the monument sums up many of the formal themes that have played through Islamic architecture. Its refined elegance is a conspicuous contrast both to the Hindu architecture of pre-Islamic India, with its thick walls, corbeled arches, and heavy lintels, and to the Indo-Islamic styles, in which Hindu elements are combined with an eclectic assortment of motifs from Persian and Turkish sources."

Shah Jahan, the 4rth Mughal Emperor.

Although Conspiracy theorists say that it is a Hindu Temple built way before Shah Jahan's time and he just got it modified to make it the tomb for his queen Mumtaz Mahal.

The Taj Mahal was built by a Muslim Emperor named Shah Jahen who died in 1666 C.E. for his wife and Queen Mumtaz Mahal, and she is buried under one of the towers I think the one closest to Mecca, and it is in Agra, India.

It was built by the emperor ShahJahan, in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal (who, in her deathbed, has requested him to build a fortress or the like unlike any other so that she may be remembered)

Not by Emperor Shah Jahan. Emperor Shah Jahan built "TAJ MAHAL" not "THAJ MAHAL".
